Idea Journal Assignment #1: 6 Somethings For this assignment I decided to draw dragonflies, as the intricacy of their wings is beautiful and they are very interesting creatures.
Idea Journal Assignment #4: Social Issues Assignment The piece of art I decided to create an image relating to society's problem with double standards. There are MANY that we have problems with, so I chose one that is very important to me as a Christian. From my own experience, I can assuredly say that Christianity is not given the same amount of respect or kindness now as other religions or belief systems are. I am well aware of the churches past and how people used the name of God to do terrible things. I would also like to say that while this is true, these people and situations did not in any way reflect the true loving nature of Christ. In other words, it was people in authoritative positions, not God, using a good thing for wrong and for that I am sorry. In todays culture, here in Canada at least, almost anything other than the bible is uplifted, supported, loved and respected, while the bible and the name of Jesus is consistently ridiculed, mocked, and used in hateful ways. This artwork means a lot to me as I have personally felt these cultural standards of "Love Everyone & Everything" except when a Christian believes in the bible instead of society's standpoint. Again, this is not something I created to place any hate on any other religion or set of ideas, simply to shed light on this issue as well.
Social Issue: Double Standards. Why is this an issue and what needs to be fixed? Most issues in our world could be either solved or helped if we simply stopped placing double standards on everything. For example: men and women. A man getting passionate as a lawyer in court is considered powerful, whereas for a woman it is simply her being "overemotional". Another one, the one I actually chose to display in this art piece, is society's push for "everyone can have their own beliefs, ideas, and values!!" Except when yours don't agree with mine. Let's solve the world's issues with sexism, racism, Islamophobia, homophobia (all very valid and important, by the way), but we can hate on Christianity because they disagree with what WE want. Disagreements basically equal hate when double standards are placed on ideas, when in reality they are two very different things. Real Life Example: Netflix released a movie about a drunk, pot-smoking, gay Jesus, blatantly disrespecting the Christian faith, and only those who were Christians tried to do anything about it. When we see Islamophobia, everyone as a society (here in Canada) comes out in support to try and fight it. This is obviously a great thing and should happen, but the same respect is not given to the Christian faith when it is consistently mocked in the media, television and online. Why is this important to me? This is extremely important to me as a Christian woman who has faced backlash for simply being open about my faith. To see the double standards placed on a faith that I know is meant to be loving, caring, and beautiful is very sad, as it is grossly misrepresented because of a lack of understanding. Society preaches an "acceptance and love for all" message, but conveniently leaves Christianity out of it.
Idea Journal Assignment #2: Atypical Book (Ben Denzer) Pages with only one straight edge I chose to create a book with salvaged pages from an old copy of "Robinson Crusoe" by Daniel Defoe, that each only have one edge that is straight and smooth. Each other edge is rough and torn, much like we are as people, with maybe one or two aspects of our lives seemingly smooth and perfect, yet with so many rough edges that just add to the beauty of who we are.
Idea Journal Assignment #3: Creative Idea Prompt Here I used the prompt "Draw a picture that lies all over" and decided to speak on the detriment of social media on peoples mental health. Above you see what is said and posted, and below what is actually being thought.
Idea Journal Assignment #5: Figures For this assignment, I used all photos that I have taken, or were taken of me. They are all of people who are important to me.
